1 in 4 Americans Cannot Name One Stroke Risk Factor

May 14, 2013

TriStar Health to Offer Free Stroke Screenings

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (May 14 2013) -On average, stroke victims wait between three to six hours before they go to the emergency room. But for many, immediate medical care can be the difference between life and death.

According to the American Stroke Association (ASA), up to 80% of strokes are preventable. There are an estimated 780,000 strokes in the U.S. each year, yet one in four Americans cannot name a single stroke risk factor. High blood pressure is one of the main risk factors for stroke.

“TriStar Health utilizes 24/7 telemedicine technology to access stroke experts who can determine the best treatment plan for those suffering a stroke and coordinate the rapid transfer to one of our many Primary Stroke Centers in Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky,” says TriStar Health Neuroscience Administrator Debra Philpot, R.N. “However, if someone is suffering a stroke and they do not get to the emergency room on time, permanent disability or death can occur.”

Philpot says that’s why TriStar Health wants to educate local communities during the month of May- National Stroke Awareness Month-about the risk factors for stroke as well as offering these free upcoming screenings:
