Centennial Opens Expanded NICU
May 15, 2008
Women’s Hospital at Centennial Medical Center opened Phase I of their NICU expansion on May 15. The newly expanded family-centered care unit maintains the most advanced monitoring and ventilation technology in a new spacious and Garden theme setting. It is designated a level III nursery by the State of Tennessee, providing the highest level of care for premature and critically ill infants. The 60 licensed NICU beds are a combination of intensive care and continuing care beds.
“Parents can rest assure that every convenience has been added to make their experience easier while their child is in the NICU and are welcome in the unit at any time,” said Joann Ettien, Administrator of Women’s Hospital. “There is dedicated parent space at each infant's bedside where parents may remain throughout the night.”
The expansion encompasses a total renovation of the entire seventh floor plus the east wing of the eight floor. To maintain ongoing operations of the existing NICU, the project renovation has been structured into three phases.
Phase One, which opens May 15, is the renovation of the west wing of the seventh floor for 12 Continuing Care beds and 8 Neonatal Intensive Care beds. The north wing provides space for two parent/infant rooms, family waiting room, physician’s sleep room, equipment storage, respiratory therapy work room, and staff locker/lounge.
Phase Two includes renovation to the east wing of the eighth floor for 24 Continuing Care beds with support space.
Phase Three is the renovation of the existing NICU on the seventh floor each wing for 16 Neonatal Intensive care beds with support space.
Earl Swenson Associates, Inc. of Nashville will be the architect for the project. The architectural firm has designed over 8,500 projects throughout the United States and abroad.
