Heart surgeons completed Maze IV Surgical Certification Course
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (February 18, 2013) – Cardiovascular surgeons at TriStar Centennial Heart & Vascular Center have been designated ‘Certified Cox Maze IV Arrhythmia Surgeons’ following completion of certification requirements for the first FDA-approved system for the surgical treatment of atrial fibrillation, or AFIB. TriStar Centennial Heart & Vascular Center is the only program in Tennessee with 100% of cardiac surgeons designated as FDA Certified surgeons.
“Our cardiovascular surgeons have completed all of the certification training elements for the AtriCure Synergy Ablation System, a surgical solution for treating the most common type of irregular heart rhythm known as atrial fibrillation,” said Jim Drumwright, chief operating officer of the TriStar Centennial Heart & Vascular Center in Nashville, Tenn. “TriStar Centennial Heart & Vascular is proud to be among the first in Nashville to complete this certification for the treatment of AFIB.”
Certification in the AtriCure Synergy Ablation System is the first and only FDA-approved surgical system in the United States, catheter or surgical, for the treatment of patients with persistent and chronic atrial fibrillation during open-heart concomitant coronary artery bypass grafting and/or valve replacement or repair procedures.
The comprehensive certification training program was developed specifically for surgeons and endorsed by the Educational Committee of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. It is the first course of its kind focused on safety and efficacy of the Maze IV surgical procedure for treating atrial fibrillation. Successful course completion is required as part of FDA approval for the Synergy Ablation System. Certification benefits include standardization of AFIB treatment and increased proficiency in performing AFIB cases.
“Our team is seeing a growing number of patients with chronic atrial fibrillation that benefit greatly from a surgical solution when other options have failed to restore and maintain normal sinus rhythm,” explained Seenu Reddy, M.D., cardiovascular surgeon at TriStar Centennial Heart & Vascular Center. “We are committed to adopting the most advanced and effective techniques to provide our patients with quality healthcare outcomes. Our entire cardiovascular surgery team becoming certified in using this system to perform the Cox Maze IV AFIB procedure to correct an irregular heart rhythm is another example of our commitment to quality heart care for patients in Middle Tennessee.”
AFIB is a common age-related arrhythmia and is a major health problem in the United States. Currently, about 3 million Americans suffer from AFIB. Patients who suffer from atrial fibrillation are also at increased risk for health consequences including risk of stroke.
