Surgical Procedures for Multiple Sclerosis

There are no surgical treatments for multiple sclerosis (MS), but there are options available to treat the symptoms. These include:

  • Surgically-placed pumps—These pumps, placed inside the body, can deliver medications to reduce spasticity and pain.
  • Deep brain stimulation—This involves implanting a device in the brain that sends electrical signals, which can block the signals that are triggering tremors. Some people with MS have tremors (in the limbs or other parts of the body) that affect daily activities.
