Hyperbaric medicine

During hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), the patient breathes 100 percent oxygen while under pressure in the hyperbaric chamber, causing oxygen to saturate the blood and plasma levels. This high-level oxygen may be delivered four times further into diseased tissue than by breathing air alone. This high-oxygen environment builds new blood vessels, decreases painful edema and invigorates healing mechanisms while killing harmful bacteria and neutralizing tissue-destroying oxygen free radicals.

HBOT is used to treat wound conditions when other methods have failed or do not fit the patient’s needs. Some of those conditions include:

  • Enhancement of healing in selected problem wounds
  • Crush injuries
  • Necrotizing soft tissue infections
  • Osteomyelitis
  • Radiation tissue injury
  • Skin grafts and flaps
  • Diabetic wounds of the lower extremity
  • Acute traumatic injury

What to expect

  • After an initial consultation and examination, you will receive instructions on your treatment.
  • Before treatment, you will change into provided cotton garments. For safety reasons, no other clothing may be worn inside of a hyperbaric oxygen chamber.
  • Once you are comfortably positioned inside the chamber, the pressure will gradually be increased and the temperature will temporarily rise. You may experience fullness in your ears because of the increased pressure. Our technicians will instruct you on ways to help clear the pressure and relieve any discomfort.
  • Most treatment sessions will last approximately two hours. While undergoing treatment, you may watch TV, relax or even sleep.

You and your caregiver will be educated in proper techniques in dressing changes, wound protection and prevention. Other treatment may include:

  • Infection control
  • Bioengineered skin grafting
  • Compression therapy
  • Negative pressure wound therapy
  • Lymphedema therapy
  • Ostomy care and education
